Rt. 10 Over Appomattox River

  • Rt. 10 Over Appomattox River

Skanska was awarded a $9.3 million contract to build a bridge over the Appomattox River in Hopewell, Va.

Because the new bridge had to be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge, great care was given to assure that no damage was done to the existing structure and that traffic delays were minimized. Access to the work was achieved using both barge-mounted cranes and non-credible earthen causeways.

The scope of work for this project included:
· installation of a Timber Pile Fender System
· instillation of stone columns to stabilize the bridge approaches
· construction on 24-inch square precast concrete pile caps and hammer head concrete caps

The superstructure consisted of Type V and VI ASSHTO girders with stay-in-place metal forms and a cast-in-place deck.
